EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PLACEMENT

Experiential learning placements (ELPs) are a powerful tool for supporting career development by immersing graduate students and research fellows in environments where they build career-focused networks, skills, knowledge, self-understanding, and confidence.

TRIANGLE ELPs provide opportunities for graduate students and fellows to build skills and knowledge that cannot be acquired at their home institution and/ or provide diverse biomedical research career experiences beyond academia.

They also expose awardees to job sectors where they can build relationships (a crucial step toward successfully gaining entry into a field) and assess how well a field or role aligns (or doesn’t!) with their skills, values, and long-term career and personal goals.

TRIANGLE has strong partnerships with industry, government, scientific journals, not-for profits, and other key groups where you can pursue an ELP. Or you can design one of your own! Our diverse intersectoral partners will enable you to gain experience, engage with the community, develop technical skills, build career readiness and professional networks, and be competitive for careers within and beyond academic research or clinical practice.

When it comes to figuring out where you want to do an ELP, the sky is really the limit! Tell us what you want to learn, or what job you want to try, and we’ll work with our extensive network of partners and College of Mentors to find the perfect placement for you.

Awardees can leverage ELPs to gain expertise in emerging research skills such as artificial intelligence, genomics, microbiome analysis, organoid generation, or big data management through established partnerships with Centres of Excellence across Canada. We also offer members the opportunity to participate in real-world platforms for health research (e.g., CIDsCaNN, CHILD, CanGIEC, IMAGINE, NEOPICS, CanNASH Network) to learn skills associated with managing large research teams and networks. Or you can develop an ELP of your own, anywhere in the world!

TRIANGLE doctoral and postdoctoral awardees  are eligible for up to $3,500 in ELP funding for one placement during their 3-year award term.

TRIANGLE funding can also be combined with Mitacs scholarships and fellowships, Tri-Agency Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement awards, institutional supports, and other sources of funding to allow for longer or more time-intensive placements.

If you already know where and with whom you want to complete a TRIANGLE ELP, visit the ELP award page.

If you don’t know yet where or what kind of placement you want to pursue, you can reach out to ELP Program Chair Dr. Simon Hirota or the TRIANGLE Program Manager for support and connection to potential ELP locations and mentors.

Once you’ve embarked on an ELP, be asked to complete a
