Dr. Genelle Lunken is an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), a registered dietitian, and translational research lead at the IBD Centre of BC. She has over a decade of dietetic experience specializing in surgical and gastrointestinal conditions. Dr. Lunken earned her PhD in Nutritional Science at Massey University, New Zealand, where she studied how habitual fibre intake shapes gut microbiota responses to prebiotic interventions. In 2017, she moved to Vancouver for a postdoctoral fellowship with Drs. Bruce Vallance and Kevan Jacobson, expanding her research to examine fibre-microbiota-inflammation interactions in IBD models. In 2023, she established her lab at UBC, focusing on host-microbe interactions and factors influencing variable responses to dietary and medical therapies in IBD. Her team investigates ARFID in IBD, the role of fungi in therapy response and diet modulation, and mechanistic bacteria-fungi-diet interactions using an in vitro fermentation system.
