Luke Xiu is a second-year Immunology and Human Biology student at the University of Toronto whose path into liver research is both scientific and personal. In Dr. Adam Gehring's laboratory at the University Health Network, Luke is building a Golden Gate cloning platform to help rapidly express hepatitis B virus-specific T cell receptors, with the long-term goal of advancing T cell-based immunotherapies for chronic HBV. His interest in immunology began with a fascination for CRISPR and grew through hands-on research in viral infection, macrophage biology, and immune signaling. Motivated by first-hand experiences with liver disease, Luke hopes to contribute to therapies that can meaningfully improve the lives of patients and families affected by chronic liver conditions. Outside the lab, he enjoys mentoring younger students as they find their footing in research, playing basketball, and camping outdoors.
