Carmela Rapino is a first-year medical student at Toronto Metropolitan University. Prior to pursuing medicine, Carmela completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences with Honours at Queen's University, with her thesis project focusing on evaluating the implementation of an HIV prevention clinic, serving a mixed suburban/rural setting. This experience led Carmela to complete a Master of Science in Epidemiology at Queen's University under the co-supervision of Dr. Sahar Saeed and Dr. Giada Sebastiani. As the inaugural Canadian MASLD trainee, her research focused on utilizing Marginal Structural Models to evaluate the prognostic utility of the new steatotic liver disease subtypes in association with all-cause mortality. Together, these experiences drive Carmela's aspirations of becoming a clinician-scientist committed to advancing equitable care and understanding how systems can be improved. Outside of research, Carmela enjoys being involved in leadership roles on her school's student council, attending dance classes, and spending time with family and friends.
